“AUSSIE, Aussie, Aussie! Oi, oi, oi! Our sausage sizzle will bring you joy!”
If you were driving past or dropping by Home Timber and Hardware in Biloela this morning you would have heard the enthusiastic sales pitch of a group of happy children dressed in blue and red uniforms.
Holding signs and waving to passing motorists (who, in turn, often waved back or tapped out a friendly beep on their car horn), the sight of children from the Biloela Little Athletics Club made for a cheerful start to the weekend.
Little Athletics organisers, parents and helpers had the barbie fired up with sausages and cold drinks for sale to raise funds to help local families attend this year’s State Championships in March 11-13.
After the Biloela Club hosted the Regional Championships last year, Centre Manager Joselyn Thornton said 17 members had been selected for the State Championships in Brisbane.
While hungry hardware shoppers made a start on the sausages this morning, the season for Biloela Little Athletics doesn’t start just yet. “There will be two trial days coming up on March 20 and March 27 and then the season will officially begin on April 24,” Joselyn said.
As well as the high of holding a very successful Regional Championships in 2021, Biloela Little Athletics had more to celebrate recently, with the club receiving a Coles Community Grant. The funds from this enabled the club to purchase a laptop, a new first-aid kit to replace their old one, and a line marker boom attachment so that three lines can be marked at once.
There will be more sausage sizzles coming up to help get the kids to the State Championships so keep your eye out for the next one.
In the meantime, first place goes to the Biloela Little Athletics Club for combining three great Aussie traditions – sport, snags and smiles.
